Greatest Female Albums in the Past 10 years
September 06, 2019
Today, I'm gonna list down my 18 greatest albums that are
made by women in the last 8 years! The main reason why I didn't generalized the
whole idea (which is actually what I intended to do) because if I didn't
considered the span of time, this list would be full of 60s, 80s, or even 90s
music. This is gonna be a very long list so without further ado, let's dive
into it.

Carly
Rae Jepsen,
EMOTION
This
album is polished yet it touches cliché subjects like heartbreak, love, and
social issues and anxieties. The album is full of bangers right from the track
opener, Run Away With Me to the 80s disco esque When I Needed You. The album
takes you to a nostalgic rollercoaster ride as it manages to entertain you from
start to finish while setting aside that infamous meme that almost broke the
internet. It is like a record that is released in mid-80s and is sung by
Madonna.
Essential
Tracks:
Boy
Problems, All That, Your Type, I Really Like You, Let's Get Lost
Sky
Ferreira
Night
Time, My Time
A
pleasing pop rock debut that manages to shock me because of the creativity that
this LP exerts. Clever and smart, this album shine bright compared to her
contemporaries because of it's restrained and compulsive listening effect. From
the infamous cover art to the seductive whisper voice, this one-of-a-kind LP is
worth listening from the very first track to the last one.
Essential
Tracks:
24
Hours, I Blame Myself, Boys, You're Not The One, Nobody Asked Me (If I Was
Okay)
Taylor
Swift,
Red
Right
from the lead single, I already predicted that Taylor is gonna be on her way to
being a popstar. This is her crossover album that totally flourishes because of
the catchy hooks and the good songwriting and how it totally ignores all the
aspects of a country album. Though there are some exceptions (like the gem
Begin Again), the whole LP is full of well-written pop songs that established
Taylor Swift as one of the best popstars on the planet.
Essential
Tracks:
Holy
Ground, All Too Well, Begin Again, I Knew You Were Trouble, Red, Girl At Home,
I Almost Do
Helena
Hauff,
Discreet
Desires
Another
fancy electro debut that manages to be dark and gritty but fun at the same
time. Dark acid techno slabs and lo-fi beats make up this whole LP with some
decent synth loops and unique soundscapes. I know that I have to put something
like this in my list because music like this don't get much attention. Overall,
it's a pretty good album with authentic melodies that has a retro feel to it.
Essential
Tracks:
Spur,
Tripartite Pact, Sworn To Scerecy Part I, Dreams In Colour, Funeral Mortality
Jo
Johnson,
Weaving
This
LP is surprisingly good with only five songs and almost 40 minutes of listening
that will keep you coming back for more. The clean chiming electronic beats and
sounds are just one of the reasons why this album is so compelling. This is
actually not what I expected from her since Huggy Bear but it actually is
pretty good with some long and flawless tracks that support this entire album
overall.
Essential
Tracks:
Ancestral
Footsteps, Silver Threads, Weaving, In The Shadow of the Workhouse
Robyn,
Body
Talk
This
is a result of three mini-LPs that Robyn made. Just add a few powerful songs
and you will have the perfect and humurous album that is super catchy in a
weird but good way. The experimentation is greatly appreciated and the
sometimes honest lyrics are pretty funny too. There are some great moments
where she showed her complexity by tuoching our hearts about the deep songs
that gladly exist on this powerful LP. This bubblegum pop album is almost
perfect that you should definitely listen to whenever you have some time.
Essential
Tracks:
Dancing
On My Own, Fembot, Dancehall Queen, Don't Fucking Tell Me What To Do, In My
Eyes
Cate
Le Bon,
CYRK
The
follow-up of the whimsical and ambitious debut album that made me a fan has a
lot of solid tracks. The 1970s psychedelic technopop production is paired with
playful and irreverent lyrics. The tracks ranges from being magical to being
dark that manages to get your attention. The guitar riffs are making me crazy
and the production is just beautiful. As a result, the LP can be considered as
a psychedelic rock album with a lot of confidence and potential for the band.
Essential
Tracks:
Fold
The Cloth, Through The Mill, Ploughing Out Part 1 & 2, CYRK, Puts Me To
Work
Lorde,
Melodrama
This
might be one of the newest on this list but it's certainly an album to be
reckoned with. This decade defining LP tackles on subjects like love,
heartbreak and partying all the while being vulnerable and honest. Lorde's
debut might have touches of electronic lo-fi beats, this sophomore album has,
well, lo-fi beats too but with enough piano to make it more vulnerable and raw.
Though considerably short, this is an LP that deserves recognition and love
from the crowd because of it's poetic songwriting, relatability, and passion
that completely coated this powerful album.
Essential
Tracks:
Homemade
Dynamite, The Louvre, Sober II, Green Light, Liability, Green Light, Hard
Feelings/Loveless
Taylor
Swift,
1989
Taylor
Swift has been making perfect pop songs that play on the radio but it is until
2014 that she decided to put out a full-lenght pop album that doesn't only live
up to the hype but also deliver a good listen with some good tracks and good
writing. She dissed and burned all of her banjos and ukeleles for the Max
Martin production that is well polished and also a bit glittery. Though all of
her previous abums are successful, we can't deny the fact that this is her
breakthrough album that made her one of the best popstars of today.
Essential
Tracks:
I
Know Places, Style, Clean, New Romantics, Wildest Dreams
Alabama
Shakes,
Sound
and Color
This
unexpected LP is strange and weird in a very good way. There is something in
the instrumentation that really fascinates me. The guitar and piano is done so
originally and quirkly that it almost matches the soaring operatic-like voice.
The lyrics are, as always, is great as it focuses on tales of restricted love
and at the same time fighting for the blood soaked country. The whole LP is one
of the best albums that is made by a woman in our decade, at least.
Essential
Tracks:
Shoegaze,
Gemini, Miss You, Don't Wanna Fight, Gimme All Your Love
Adele,
25
Graceful
and vulnerable at the same time, this album offers more on nostalgic songs and
some emotional ones that really stood out. With some great moments and
incredibly good phrasing, this latest LP from the master of breakup songs is a
masterpiece that will leave a mark for future aspiring artist that underwent
what she had went through all her life.
Essential
Tracks:
All
I Ask, Hello, River Lea, Remedy, Send My Love (To Your New Lover), Sweetest
Devotion
Solange,
A
Seat by the Table
A
coming-of-age album that dives deeper into the black culture with some funky
production that matches her vocals. This honest and rich LP is a wider look
into a black girl coping up with womanhood in this black cultural appreciation
album made by a strong black woman. It is worth the listen if you listen to
Beyoncé's stuff. It runs in the blood, y'know.
Essential
Tracks:
Junie,
Rise, Weary, Mad ft. Lil Wayne, Where Do We Go, F.U.B.U
Dessa,
Chime
Genre-bending,
emotional and rewarding this LP from the American singer and rapper is an album
that everyone should be listening to. I have always admired Dessa's work from
the start. She has that captivating feel that is always present in her albums.
Every song on this album is detailed. Though I was worried at first for her
going into the pop side of things since her earlier songs aren't really that
pop, I pretty much enjoyed it from start to finish. A true masterpeice.
Essential
Tracks:
All
OF IT! (I can't type all of them because it would take me hours)
Against
Me!,
Transgender
Dysphoria Blues
Being
one of the most timely album of the decade, Transgender Dysphoria Blues is one
hell of a ride as it displays a punk rock aura into a more personal and
vulnerable subject. The punk rock sound (considering the great catchy drumworks
by Adam Willard and the powerful and rhytmic guitar by Laura Jane Grace) is
pretty cool too considering a transgender woman bravely wrote a whole album
about her transgender dysphoria. It is a pretty solid LP that will be
remembered because of it's subject matter.
Essential
Tracks:
Transgender
Dysphoria Blues, fuckmylife666, True Trans Soul Rebel, Paralytic States,
Taylor
Swift,
Speak
Now
This
is the longest Taylor album and also her best as she sings about maturity that
has always been present since her sophomore album back in 2008. The best thing
about this album is that she wrote all of the songs in it without any
co-writers to guide her and it came out as one of her best to date. The LP even
sold out a million in it's first week which is pretty impressive for a
20-year-old Taylor.
Essential
Tracks:
Enchanted,
The Story of Us, Dear John, Sparks Fly, Long Live, Haunted
Joanna
Newsom,
Divers
I
would have never thought that I would cover a folk album in my life especially
Joanna Newsom's. The layered instrumentation of this 2-hour long album didn't
really bore me because of her witty and poetic songwriting. Paired with her
soaring unique vocals, Divers is an album that really captured my heart. I love
Joanna Newsom's debut a lot (though I never really finish it and continue
listening to it the next day) but she made an even better LP this time with two
discs of gorgeous harps and instruments that compliment her unique powerful
vocals. The underlying theme complimented the musical motif of this album.
Overall, Divers is a really solid record that will capture your heart, mind and
ears into the very end.
Essential
Tracks:
Sapokanikan,
A Pin-Light Bent, Goose Eggs, Anecdotes, The Things I Say, Waltz of the 101th
Lightborne
Adele,
21
Remorse
and power builds up this masterpiece with enough emotion and great vocal
performance to satisfy the listeners. The pain and power that is present in
this album is so strong that you, as a listener, will be trapped with her own
agony and struggle. In the end, you don't have another choice but to just
sing-along and cry while listening to this whole goddamn album.
Essential
Tracks:
Roling
In The Deep, Set Fire To The Rain, Rumor Has It, I'll Be Waiting, Turning
Tables, Someone Like You, Don't You Remember
Beyoncè,
Lemonade
Raw,
emotional, polished and experimental, this is the best album of 2016 and is
also the best female album in the last 8 years, hands down. This defined
Beyoncé's creativity as she sings about love and infidelity, peace and war, all
the while complimenting the production with her sweet and ever ranging voice.
This might be one of the newest one on the list but it definitely have to have
a top spot for an album this great.
Essential
Tracks:
Daddy
Lessons, Pray You Catch Me, Love Drought, Formation, Freedom ft. Kendrick
Lamar, Sandcastles
